As we enter 2025, influenza continues to spread, making it critical to get vaccinated, especially for children, pregnant women, and seniors. 2025 Korea Influenza Update

2025 Korea Influenza Update

A Severe Influenza Season: What Makes It Different?

Starting in late 2024, Influenza Type A has rapidly spread across Korea. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) reports that this flu season is one of the most severe in recent years, marked by a high infection rate and severe symptoms.

Key Features of Influenza Type A

  • Virus Types: A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2) are simultaneously spreading.
  • Symptoms: High fever, headaches, muscle aches, and extreme fatigue are common, with higher risks of complications such as pneumonia, especially for children and seniors.
  • Fast Transmission: Influenza Type A spreads quickly, particularly in crowded indoor settings.

Current Flu Situation: Peaked but Still Worrying

As of the second week of January 2025, flu cases decreased slightly to 86.1 per 1,000 outpatients, compared to 99.8 in the first week. However, infection rates remain alarmingly high among children aged 7-12 (149.5 cases) and teens aged 13-18 (141.5 cases). Alarmingly, hospitalizations have increased by over 10%, emphasizing the need for enhanced medical support.

Vaccination: The Key to Prevention

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

The KDCA strongly advises the following groups to prioritize vaccination due to their higher risk of severe complications:

  • Children aged 6 months to 13 years
  • Pregnant women
  • Seniors aged 65 and older

Where to Get Vaccinated?

  • Vaccinations are available at designated clinics and public health centers. Visit the National Immunization Program Website for details.
  • Antiviral medications are covered under health insurance for high-risk individuals showing symptoms.

Prevention Tips for a Healthy Winter

KDCA Commissioner Ji Young-mi emphasized that while the flu numbers are slightly declining, they remain significantly high compared to previous years. To stay safe, follow these preventive measures:

  1. Get Vaccinated: If you haven’t already, schedule your flu shot immediately.
  2. Maintain Hygiene:
    • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 30 seconds.
    • Cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve when coughing.
  3. Wear a Mask: Always wear a mask in crowded indoor spaces.
  4. Ventilate Regularly: Open windows for at least 10 minutes every two hours.
  5. Seek Medical Help Quickly: If you experience fever or respiratory symptoms, consult a healthcare provider promptly.

Together, We Can Prevent the Flu

Influenza poses a significant health risk, but with timely vaccinations and strict adherence to prevention guidelines, we can protect ourselves and others. Let’s work together to ensure a safe and healthy winter for all.
