In 2023, K-Food+ exports from South Korea reached an all-time high of $13 billion, comprising $9.98 billion in agri-food exports and $3.05 billion in agricultural-related industries. Led by iconic products like ramen, rice-based goods, and kimchi, South Korea continues to strengthen its position as a global powerhouse in agricultural exports.

The Global Rise of K-Food

1. Ramen: A Global Sensation

Ramen exports surged to an impressive $1.25 billion, marking a 31.1% year-on-year growth. As a key product of K-Food, ramen has gained immense popularity worldwide thanks to its frequent appearances in Korean dramas and films, as well as the viral "ramen-eating challenges" on social media.

  • United States: Ramen exports to the U.S. increased by over 70%, aided by new partnerships with major retailers in Texas and widespread online buzz.
  • China: Online platforms such as Tmall and JD.com drove significant growth in ramen sales, leading to a strong recovery in exports.

Ramen has evolved into a cultural icon that represents the success of Korean food globally.

2. The Success of Rice-Based Products and Kimchi

Rice-Based Products

The growing demand for gluten-free and convenient meal solutions fueled a 38.4% increase in rice-based product exports, reaching $300 million. Notably, exports to the United States grew by 51% due to a rising preference for healthy, easy-to-prepare meals.

Kimchi

Kimchi exports reached a historic high of $163.6 million, surpassing previous records. Innovations such as vegan and shelf-stable kimchi helped penetrate new markets like the U.S. and the Netherlands, further solidifying its status as a global favorite.

3. Agricultural-Related Industries: Emerging Opportunities

Exports in the agricultural-related sector amounted to $3.05 billion, bolstered by significant growth in pet food, animal pharmaceuticals, and pesticides.

  • Pet Food: A 7.4% increase in exports was driven by targeted market research and product development.
  • Animal Pharmaceuticals: Demand for poultry vaccines in the Middle East boosted exports by 9%.
  • Pesticides: Exports surged by 61.7% due to expanded markets in South America and Southeast Asia.

Smart farms and agricultural machinery also contributed to the sector’s expansion, setting the stage for future growth.

4. Regional Export Highlights

United States

The U.S. emerged as South Korea's largest export market in 2023, achieving a record $1.59 billion in sales, driven by products like snacks, frozen gimbap, and ramen. Collaborations with major retailers and local events further enhanced K-Food’s visibility and popularity.

China

China retained its position as the second-largest market with $1.51 billion in exports, buoyed by online sales of ramen and the growing presence of K-beverages in local café chains.

Japan

Despite challenges such as the weak yen and prolonged consumer stagnation, Japan remained a key market with $1.37 billion in exports, ranking third globally.

5. Future Plans and Strategies

To maintain this upward trajectory, South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) aims to expand into new markets like the Middle East, Latin America, and India. Key initiatives include:

  • Enhanced marketing efforts and support for trade shows.
  • Resolving non-tariff barriers to facilitate smoother market entry.
  • Strengthening collaboration with the agricultural industry to address export challenges.

Conclusion: K-Food’s Global Journey

K-Food has evolved from a culinary offering to a cultural ambassador for South Korea. By leveraging the popularity of Korean culture and innovative products, K-Food is set to achieve even greater global recognition. As MAFRA’s Director Kang Hyung-seok emphasized, the ministry will continue to support industry efforts and ensure sustainable growth in agricultural exports.
